Sore Neck? Consider a Chiro

Is your neck aching from endless browsing, swiping and texting? Do you wake up with a stiff neck from poor sleep? Maybe you’ve been practising some bad habits lately? This Spinal Health Week (23-29 May) we are asking our patients and community to Consider a Chiro for neck pain.

Research shows that neck pain is a leading cause of disability in adults (reported up to 20% of adults), with many presenting for assessment.1 In the Global Burden of Disease study in 2010, neck pain ranked fourth highest in terms of disability and twenty-first in overall burden.2 Not surprisingly, neck pain (cervicalgia) constituted in the top five back problem hospitalisations in 2017-18.3

With the average Australian spending more than 5.5 hours on their phone each day4 and a third of us checking our phone within five minutes of waking up each morning5 – means we are glued to our phones from the moment we wake up, to the moment we go to sleep!

Neck pain places a huge burden on mental health, relationships, ability to work and quality of life, and it doesn’t stop at neck pain. Neck problems are a common trigger for headaches. They can also cause jaw problems, shoulder pain, or weakness and tingling into the arms and hands.

Implementing positive spinal health habits, including good posture, sleep hygiene and partaking in regular stretching and exercise regimes are important factors in preventing neck pain.  Remember, you don’t have to live with neck pain.

Are you as mobile as you think?

During March, we at Suncoast Chiropractic will be asking our patients to get more mobile this Mobility Month!

A recent survey by the Australian Chiropractors Association (ACA) found that one in ten Australians claim their pain hindered their ability to play with their children; one in ten indicated this pain impacted their intimate relationships, and one in 20 affirmed their persistent pain resulted in increased friction with their partner.

With statistics like these, it is imperative we stay on top of our mobility and monitor any changes in our strength, balance and flexibility. This Mobility Month, try out these four simple tests to discover how ‘mobile’ you are:

  • Neck Rotation: testing how far and evenly you can turn your neck on each side.
    1. Sitting down, keep your shoulders still and against a chair.
    2. Turn your head all the way to the left, as if you were looking over your shoulder. How far around did you get?
    3. Repeat on the right. Was it even? Was it comfortable?
  • Trunk Side Bend: testing how far you can run your hand down each side of your body.
    1. Stand with your feet comfortably apart.
    2. Run a hand down the side of your leg, so you side bend without leaning backwards or forwards.
    3. Repeat on the other side. Was it even and was it comfortable to do?
  • Sit-to-Stand: testing the ease at which you can rise from your chair with crossed arms.
    1. Sit in the middle of your chair. Cross your arms over your chest.
    2. Keeping your back straight and arms across your chest.
    3. Stand straight up and then sit back down. Did you do this easily or was it hard?
  • Single Leg Stance: testing how well you balance on each leg.
    1. In a safe environment free of trip hazards, stand upright with feet together and place hands on hips.
    2. Lift one foot off the ground. Do not allow your legs to touch. Time how long you can stand without moving.
    3. Repeat on opposite side. Are you able to stand on each leg for at least 40 seconds? (If under 60 years)

Back To School 2022 Checklist

Every January millions of Australian children, including some of our very own patients, go back to school. With fresh books and polished shoes, it is a very exciting time. While our kids are busy learning their times tables, developing, and growing it is also important for our kids to be mindful of their health and wellbeing in the classroom across the year.

While most parents and children have a checklist of stationery, books and supplies for starting the school year, we are providing our patients with a ‘Back to School Health Checklist.’ The checklist, developed as part of the Australian Chiropractors Association’s (ACA) Back to School Campaign, is a great way to encourage kids to build healthy habits at school and at home.

They are quick and simple to follow and can be easily incorporated into your child’s everyday routine. For instance, packing a healthy lunch filled with lots of fruit and veggies, getting 60 minutes of daily physical activity and wearing the backpack correctly by carrying it with both straps.

The Health Checklist also reminds kids to reduce their recreational screen time, sit correctly in the classroom and consider chiropractic care.

Kids don’t often think about the impact that common activities like sitting in a classroom, carrying a heavy school bag or even excessive screen time can have on their overall health and wellbeing – that’s where the checklist comes in handy!

Why Does Posture Matter?

Stop what you’re doing right now. Look at your posture. Are you on your phone? Slouched on the couch? curled up under the covers?

Your posture is one of the first things other people notice about you and can affect so much more in your life than just spinal health. Healthy posture has been linked to better breathing and has even been shown to affect your confidence.

Did you know, slouching decreases your ability to breathe…. Go on… try it! Take a deep breath in. What did you notice? Now bring your chest up, and try again. It is so easy to think we know what good posture really is. Your mum has been telling you your whole life, “pull your shoulders back”, “stand up straight”. However, correct posture is about lifting your sternum (chest bone) up. From a side view, keep your ear in line with your shoulders, hips and ankles.

First Year Anniversary

     

Last week we celebrated our 1 year anniversary at Bingera Terrace. We would love to say a huge thank you to all of our clients and local community who have supported us over the last year. Here’s to many more years to come.

Congratulation Julian & Ramses
This week Julian and Ramses won the “every day hero’s” photo competition with the Australian Chiropractic Association (ACA) with this fantastic photo. Well done guys!!
The prize was tickets to the ACA annual ball, Ramses has declined the invitation as he has no body to dance with !!!

No more stairs
As some of you have already noticed we have removed the stairs that were at the entrance to our Reception, and extended the ramp. We feel this gives a lovely flow to the entrance of the clinic.

   

QR Code
QLD Health have advised that we do not require a QR code for appointment check-in. Our computer software logs each person when they arrive for their appointment which is sufficient for contact tracing.

Farewell
We are sad to announce that Sophia will be leaving the clinic. Sophia joined the company 18 months ago as a Receptionist and quickly became part of the team. It has been an absolute joy working with Sophia, and we wish her well on her new adventures.

Welcome to Kerrie
We would like to introduce you to our newest super star. Kerrie comes to us with a wealth of life experience and she is looking forward to getting to know everyone and helping you on your health journey.

The Bloody Long Walk – Thank You

It was an early rise on Sunday with everyone meeting for our 6:30am start at Tickle Park, Coolum Beach. It was a beautiful day with a beautiful pink sunrise leading to clear blue sky’s.

There were over 1,000 participants on the day and we were thankful for the pit stops that were set up every 5km, providing water, fruit , toilets and a cheer squads to keep us going.

With all the training! we had done 9 weeks prior to the day, the first 15km were relatively easy. We stopped for a 15-minute break at 15km to eat and take a rest.

Sophia had a pre-existing knee injury that started to flare up and soldiered on until she could take no more. She did and amazing job to get to the 22km mark. A terrific effort Soph!

At 30km things started to get tough for Narelle, with very sore legs and blisters on her toes she hobbled to the finish line.

Kathryn was the most reluctant to sign up, but surprised everyone, including herself in finishing with relative ease.

We all knew Julian would breeze through the day.

The sight of the finish line came into view with 1km to go and the feeling was euphoric.  It was a joy to see family and friends at the finish line with banners cheering us on.

We would like to say a bloody big thank you to every single person who donated and showed their support over the last 9 weeks. Together we raised $1,139.63 towards The Mito Foundation.
